[edit] Looking for networked events?

Try the following:

For Second Life:

  • Go to http://secondlife.com/events/
    • There's a listing of events there & you can filter by things like "Arts and Culture", "Education", "Sports" etc. You'll find quite a few things there.
  • Log into Second Life and do Ctrl or Cmd+F (for "find")
    • a big search window will display and you can look for events that way too
  • Follow these blogs:
    • New World Notes: http://nwn.blogs.com/
    • The Click Heard Round the World: http://www.rikomatic.com/ </b>
    • Both of the authors, Wagner James Au and Rik Panganiban, consistently report on interesting things within Second Life as well as other aspects of virtual worlds.

For live online broadcasts:

    • For live online broadcasts, a good source is Livestream: http://www.livestream.com/ - There are featured live channels on the home page and more are available under "Live Now". Click on a channel to go to that page and you'll see the number of viewers watching where it says "On Air - Live" on the bottom of the video (you can also see the number of viewers on the "Live Now" page). Most of the channels have live text chat available, though some turn off that feature; try to choose one that has chat available (you'll see it to the right of the video), since that makes for a more interactive environment.

For networked events in general (including SL events):

  • Upcoming webinar series produced by NTEN, the Nonprofit Technology Network
  • Networked events - my delicious feed: http://delicious.com/funksoup/networkedevent
    • I try to keep a running tab on networked events available on the blog under "Networked Events" on the right side, which sources my delicious feed

.................

Note on SL events: What I strongly suggest though, before venturing out into Second Life events, is that you acquaint yourself with some basic navigation and moving skills, so that you're not overwhelmed with the "newness" of being inside Second Life (it can be very overwhelming your first time - and you may not want to color your experience of an event with being lost - i.e., "I went to the event but I couldn't figure out how to voice chat so I felt isolated" or "I went to the event but my avatar was naked and I couldn't figure out how to put a shirt on" -- you may laugh but it has happened!). I put up a page on the wiki that is still a draft, but you can have a look and go down the list to make sure that you can do some basic things:
Basics in Second Life

Go through orientation island thoroughly (you'll be there automatically when you first log in) and that should be a big help. You can also check out the tutorials on to http://secondlife.com/showcase/tutorials/ and under "Browse" go to "Category: Beginners"
