- Badongo - free file storage and sharing, unlimited disk space, up to 1 GB per file (after a period of inactivity, files may be deleted?)
- MediaFire - free file storage and sharing, unlimited disk space, up to 100 MB per file (after a period of inactivity, files may be deleted?)
- Nakido - free file storage and sharing, unlimited disk space, up to 99 GB per file, files kept forever/no deletion

- Gimp - (GNU Image Manipulation Program) free, open source software for image composition, editing and authoring (for Mac, Windows, Unix)
- Aviary's Phoenix - browser-based image composition, editing, authoring and mashup community. Aviary has a whole suite of online apps: Phoenix-image editor, Peacock-visual laboratory with plenty of effects and fun generators, Toucan-color swatches, Raven-vector editor. The user interfaces are very intuitive and especially well-suited for mashup-making and sharing.

- Twiddla - same as Thinkature but less set-up needed - just click "Try it now in the sandbox" and you're ready to go. Free.

- KeyWorx -- KeyWorx is a multi-user cross-media synthesizer: a distributed application that allows multiple users to generate, synthesize and process images, sounds and text within a shared realtime environment. As an instrument it allows communities of performers to dynamically control and modify all aspects of digitized media in a collaborative performance.

- Audacity - free, open source software for recording and editing sounds in Linux, Mac OS X, and other operating systems.
- Aviary's Myna - browser-based sound editing, automation, effects and mashup community. Intuitive user interface, plus access to Quantum tracks database. Especially well-suited for mashup-making and sharing.
- Hobnox - browser-based sound editing/production, sound-sharing and library. Their audio tool is seriously sophisticated so would only recommend using it if you're already experienced with audio production.
- Splice - browser-based sound editing/production, sound-sharing and remix community. Sports an advanced Flash sequencer, complete with real-time synths and DSP sound effects. Note: The Splice site has been down but looks like it's being worked on. For a comparable tool, try Aviary.

- QuickTime Broadcaster - live broadcasting software (Mac OS only). Note: certain sources require a QuickTime stream (i.e., streaming video into Second Life requires a QuickTime stream). In these cases, you'll need to use QuickTime Broadcaster which is a free app, however, you must find a server to run the stream on (in cases where you're working with a university, you can usually ask the university to use their QT streaming server)

- QuickTime Pro - *recommended, mac and windows compatible, $29.95, allows for conversion/export to many different kinds of formats, including easy export for web, mp4, H264, iPhone, etc as well as multi-channel audio, capturing of video/audio, quick editing
- Movavi - free online video converter, up to 5 files limited to 10 min each and 100 Mb total size, click File then upload videos or enter URL of video
- ffmpegx - free converter for mac, install is slightly more complex, make sure you read the install instructions on the Download page, i.e., "If you are installing ffmpegX for the first time, then you must also install the mencoder and mplayer binaries and the mpeg2enc binary..."
- Prism - free video converter ("Plus" version is for purchase, for most basic conversion needs, the free version should be suitable), mac and windows compatible
